Holyoke, Colo. - The Nebraska men’s golf team opened their season at the Ballyneal Challenge on Tuesday. The Huskers earned a second place finish after firing 585 at the par-71, 7,131-yard layout.
NU was led by freshman Jackson Wendling who finished in fourth place by carding a 72 before a second round 70. The Effingham, Ill., native played as an individual at the three team, 24-player challenge. Wendling finished one stroke ahead of junior Justin Jennings. Jennings started the one-day challenge with an even par 71 before posting a 72. Junior Mike Colgate finished in 7th place after firing 74 and 70.
Newcomer Clayton Peterson opened Tuesday with a 75 before carding 72 to earn a 10th place finish. Peterson, a Lincoln, Neb., native, played as an individual. Peterson finished one stroke ahead of Joel Sneed. Sneed, a freshman from Leland, Mich., fired a first round 71 before a 77. Freshman Jace Guthmiller also played as an individual. Guthmiller carded a 75 and 74 to finish tied for 13th place. Fellow newcomer Sean Song collected a 16th place finish after posting 150 on the day. Senior Aaron Wong managed scores of 78 and 81 on the day.
Colorado won the challenge after shooting 563 and Wyoming took third at 586. The Huskers continue the fall campaign on Sept. 13-14 in Normal, Ill., at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate.
