Taariq Allen
Senior, Wide Receiver

On his touchdown against Southern Miss
“I saw the guy coming. I put the brakes on, then when I looked up, it was closer than I thought so I said I might as well get in the end zone now just to get this any way possible.”

On hard work paying off
“Just being consistent in practice. Trying to show the coaches I can do it then just going out there in the game and executing. Besides the injury, it doesn’t really affect me anymore. It’s in the past and I just have to keep working and just keep improving.”

On if there was ever a time he wanted to give up after an injury
“The only time I ever felt like that was when I first initially got my injury. It was really bad, especially after I saw my scar. I didn’t know if I was going to be able to play or not. I got back in the training room and started seeing improvements and the next thing you know, I was running. Next thing you know, I was cutting. Next thing you know, I was catching balls again.”

On how he views conference play
“We can’t forget about what happened, but conference play is the most important part of the season. I think guys are doing a good job of staying in the training room, getting their bruises and nicks and stuff like that patched up. Guys who are not healthy are getting healthy. We just have to let the other stuff go. We go into the game with momentum, we have to win. The next opponent is Illinois. We just have to go in there and attack.”

On preparation by the wide receivers
“I just feel like as a whole group, we try to push each other. Coach Dub (Keith Williams), he’s a good coach. He brings the best out of everybody. We always say ‘Live at five’ in every game. We just try to do the best that we can. Make sure we don’t drop the ball. We can’t control everything, but we just try to be the best that we can and help each other.”

On what he tells the secondary after they struggle
“I know it’s hard playing DB. You’re playing backwards the whole game. All I tell them every time is just stay confident. Every DB gets called on at least one time. You just have to shake that off and keep pressing. If you keep playing and keep locking people up, something’s bound to happen. Something good is going to come of it. Just keep playing. Just keep their spirits up. That’s all we can do.”
