Lincoln – The Nebraska softball team opened its fall exhibition season with a 4-3 10-inning win over South Dakota on Saturday at Bowlin Stadium. The game lasted a pre-determined 10 innings, with the Huskers holding a 3-2 lead after seven innings.
Nebraska jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from sophomore Madi Unzicker and a two-run double from senior Mattie Fowler.
After Nebraska left the bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth, South Dakota scored twice in the top of the fifth to trim the lead to 3-2.
That remained the score until the bottom of the ninth, when freshman Alyvia Simmons produced an RBI single to score junior Lotte Sjulin. That run loomed large when the Coyotes cut the lead to one in the top of the 10th before sophomore right-hander Kaylan Jablonski closed out the victory.
Jablonski tossed the final 5.0 innings, allowing only one earned run while striking out six. Senior right-hander Emily Lockman earned the win, allowing one earned run in 5.0 innings.
Nebraska and South Dakota meet again on Sunday at 1p.m.
