The 1965 Cornhusker team will also have a reunion this weekend, honoring the team's 10-0 regular season and Orange Bowl berth. * Nebraska will square off against a first-time opponent for the second straight week when South Alabama comes to Lincoln. The 2015 season marks the first time NU will face back-to-back first-time opponents to open the season since 2011. Lincoln - Nebraska used a balanced offense and a stingy defense to put together four solid quarters of football in a 48-9 victory over South Alabama on Saturday night.
Junior I-back Terrell Newby, junior quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr., and junior receivers Lane Hovey, Brandon Reilly, Alonzo Moore and Jordan Westerkamp all put on a show for the 89,922 red-clan fans on hand for the 342nd consecutive sellout at Memorial Stadium. The victory gave Mike Riley his first win as head coach of the Huskers.
Newby, a 5-10, 200-pounder from Los Angeles, Calif., raced to career highs of 198 yards on 28 carries with two touchdowns to lead a Nebraska ground attack that finished with 258 yards. Newby also hauled in a pair of catches for 38 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter that put Nebraska up 14-0 less than nine minutes into the game.
Armstrong Jr., a 6-1, 220-pounder from Cibolo, Texas, orchestrated a Nebraska passing game that accounted for 303 yards and three touchdowns. Armstrong Jr. finished 21-of-30 for 270 yards and two scores, including strikes to Newby and Westerkamp, who finished with three receptions for 31 yards. Armstrong reached career marks of 4,000 passing yards and 5,000 total yards in the game.
Ryker Fyfe added a two-yard touchdown pass to Moore with 8:30 left to put the Big Red up 48-3. Moore finished with five catches for 39 yards.
While Newby, Westerkamp and Moore all hauled in touchdown passes, Reilly and Hovey did the most damage for the Huskers from their wideout spots. Reilly notched five receptions for 71 yards, while Hovey pulled down career highs of five receptions for 68 yards.
Hovey, who had two catches for a then-career high 35 yards on Nebraska's opening drive of the game, teamed with Newby to cover all 75 yards of the Huskers' first possession. Newby carried six times for 40 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown gallop to give NU a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.
Hovey, a 6-4, 205-pounder from Adel, Iowa, added a career-high-tying third reception for 10 yards on Nebraska's next possession, while Newby accounted for 22 of the Huskers' other 30 yards on the drive, including an eight-yard touchdown catch.
Newby, who carried a then-career-high 17 times for a career-high 118 yards in the first half alone, added Nebraska's final touchdown of the half with an eight-yard run in the second quarter to put the Big Red up 21-0.
Sophomore place-kicker Drew Brown added a 42-yard field goal as time expired to send Nebraska to the locker room up 24-0 at the half on the Jaguars.
Nebraska pushed the lead to 31-0 on an Imani Cross nine-yard touchdown run with 8:04 left in the third quarter to cap a six-play, 75-yard drive.
The Blackshirts lost the shutout two minutes later, surrendering a 37-yard field goal to Aleem Sunanon with 6:04 left in the quarter.
Nebraska headed to the fourth quarter with a 31-3 lead, Brown answered with a 25-yard field goal just nine seconds into the final period to push the margin to 34-3. Armstrong Jr. added a touchdown connection with Westerkamp from 21 yards out with 10:11 left to give the Huskers a 38-3 lead.
The Blackshirts then forced their third turnover of the game, as Kevin Maurice forced a fumble with a sack that was recovered by sophomore linebacker Chris Weber at the USA 2. Two plays later Fyfe attempted his first pass of the season, finding Moore in the back of the end zone to give the Huskers a 48-3 edge.
The Jaguars added the final score of the game on reserve quarterback Dallas Davis' 36-yard touchdown pass to Josh Magee with 3:36 left. USA's conversion failed to make the 48-9 final.
South Alabama finished with 313 passing yards, as Cody Clements completed 23-of-40 passes for 271 yards. He did throw one interception, a first-quarter pick by Husker junior safety Nate Gerry. It was Gerry's second interception of the season and seventh of his career. Gerry finished with three tackles on the night.
Davis added 42 yards on 3-of-5 passing, including the touchdown pass to Magee, who finished with six catches for 147 yards.
While the Jaguars found some success through the air, the Blackshirts shut down USA on the ground, holding South Alabama to just 19 yards on 24 carries for the game. Overall, Nebraska outgained USA, 561-332 on the night.
The Blackshirts welcomed the return of junior linebacker Michael Rose-Ivey, who finished with a team-high 10 tackles. Jonathan Rose added career-high eight tackles, while Daniel Davie and Chris Weber each notched six stops.
Nebraska hits the road for the first time next week when the Huskers take on Miami with kickoff set for 2:30 p.m.
