Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team competed on Wednesday against the Iowa Hawkeyes where the Huskers fell short resulting in a 4-2 mark for the match. The team is disappointed in the loss but looks forward to this weekend where they will play Northwestern on Friday, Apr. 10 at 3 p.m. in Evanston, Ill. and Illinois on Sunday, Apr. 12 at Noon in Champaign, Ill. The Huskers continue on in their season with a 10-9 mark and 3-4 in Big Ten competition.
With no doubles played in the match, No. 1, 3, and 5 singles began the competition. At No. 3, Marc Herrmann and Dominic Patrick finished in a heated match where Patrick came out on top going 6-4, 7-5.
Bradford Zitsch competed at No. 5 against the Hawkeye's Steig Martens. Zitsch competed well, winning a point for his team going 5-7 in the first set followed by 6-3, 6-4 putting the overall score at 1-1.
At No. 1, Dusty Boyer and Matt Hagen of Omaha, Neb. played in a very competitive match. The first set resulted in a tie-breaker where Boyer went 7-6(7). Hagen took the second set going 4-6 but in the third Boyer pushed through in another tie-breaker resulting in an overall win in Boyer's favor going 7-6(5).
Chris Hobgarski played Josh Silverstein at No. 4 where Hobgarski suffered a loss of 6-1, 6-1. Following at No. 2, Linus Erhart also had a tough match where he fell to Iowa's Lefteris Thedorou going 7-6, 6-3.
Wrapping up competition at No. 6, Vasileios Stavropoulos took on Jake Jacoby. Jacoby played some nice points that ultimately won him the match, producing a 6-1, 6-2 mark over Stavropoulos.
"Tough day at the office," said Coach McDermott. "I really thought we could win four of the six singles and it turned out that Iowa must have had the same thought against us. The difference was that they actually pulled through. Obviously Dusty and Ford played well and took control on their courts. On two other courts we competed very hard and came up short, but that happens. We just got beaten down on too hard and too fast. I give Iowa credit as they deserved the win today."
