Evanston, Ill. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team (12-12, 0-11 Big Ten) wrapped up the 2015 season today as Big Ten foe and 27th-ranked Northwestern Wildcats (14-6, 9-2 Big Ten) grabbed the 7-0 sweep today at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
The Wildcats earned a No. 3 seed for the 2015 Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament with the win over the Huskers, while NU will not advance.
The Wildcats gained an early 1-0 advantage over the Huskers with wins at the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles spots.
The nation's 42nd-ranked doubles duo of Alicia Barnett and Erin Larner tallied an 8-1 win over Izabella Zgierska and Mary Hanna as Mackenna Maddox and Katerina Matysova fought hard but fell short, 8-5, to the Wildcats' Alex Chatt and Lok Sze Leung.
Northwestern tallied three quick singles wins at the No. 2, No. 4 and No. 6 spots to secure the victory.
Maggy Lehmicke battled at the No. 1 spot, dropping the first set, 6-3, but fighting back to a second-set tiebreaker where she slipped to a 7-6 (4) loss to Barnett.
Hanna went head-to-head with Northwestern’s lone senior, Leung, at the No. 3 spot, falling in the first set, 7-5, but coming right back to earn a dominant 6-2 second-set win. The pair battled through a ten-point super set to decide the match, which ended in another Wildcat victory.
NU finishes the 2015 season with a 12-12 record, going 0-11 in the Big Ten.
