Champaign, Ill. - The Nebraska men's tennis team closed a weekend road trip to the state of Illinois with a 4-0 loss at the No. 3 Fighting Illini on Sunday.
The Huskers slipped to 10-11 overall on the season and 3-6 in the Big Ten Conference.
The Big Red dropped the doubles point, as NU's top tandem of Dusty Boyer and Bradford Zitsch lost a hard-fought 8-6 battle to the Fighting Illini's Jared Hiltzik and Tim Kopinski at No. 1 doubles. The Illini secured the doubles point with an 8-0 win by Farris Gosea and Aleks Vukic over NU's Chris Hobgarski and Andrew Dzulynsky at No. 3.
Vukic, who is ranked No. 49 nationally in singles, knocked off Hobgarski, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4, while the Fighting Illini's No. 68 Aron Hiltzik defeated Dzulynsky, 6-0, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. Illinois' Blake Bazarnik defeated Zitsch, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) at No. 5 singles to complete the Illini's team victory.
At No. 1 singles, Nebraska's Dusty Boyer dropped his opening set to No. 90 Farris Gosea, 6-1, but was leading 4-3 in the second set when play was stopped after the team outcome was decided.
Nebraska's 2 Marc Herrmann also fell in his first set to No. 43 Tim Kopinski, 6-3, but rebounded to take the second set from Kopinski, 6-3, before the match was halted.
At No. 6 singles, Nebraska's Scott Elsass lost his first set 6-2 to Ross Guignon from Illinois, but was leading 3-2 in the second set when play stopped.
The Huskers return home this weekend for a pair of Big Ten matches, beginning on Friday against Penn State. Action is set to begin against the Nittany Lions at 4 p.m. The Huskers will take on Ohio State Sunday at noon.
