NU Makes Strides in Loss to Penn State

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women's tennis team (12-9, 0-8 Big Ten) dropped a nail-biter to Big Ten opponent, No. 64 Penn State (10-9, 6-2 Big Ten), today at the Vine Street Courts. 

Penn State gained an early 1-0 lead over the Huskers by grabbing the doubles point. Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson battled to a 7-2 lead over McCluskey and Surin at the No. 2 spot, but did not finish after Penn State tallied victories at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, both matches ending 8-3 in the Nittany Lions favor.

Nebraska bounced back to earn three singles victories at the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 6 spots, but couldn't hold on long enough to get the win, earning Penn State the 4-3 victory.

Lehmicke shined at the No. 1 spot as she battled through three sets and came away with the 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Katie Bilk. Lehmicke improved to 10-10 on the season, playing every match at the No. 1 position in NU’s lineup.

Zgierska earned a 7-5 first-set victory at the No. 2 spot, before dropping the second, 6-4. After splitting the sets with Penn State’s Victoria Kisialeva, Zgierska didn’t let up and captured the 7-6 (2) third set win to claim the match.

Maddox earned another point for Nebraska with her win at the No. 6 spot, where she outplayed Jacqueline Zuhse, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Maddox grabbed her first Big Ten win with her defeat over Zuhse.

Action will continue on Sunday, April 12th at the Nebraska Tennis Center against No. 18 and Big Ten powerhouse, Ohio State.  The Big Red will honor senior Izabella Zgierska as she plays her final home-match as a Husker. The first 50 fans will receive #GBR aviators and Nebraska sunscreen. Come out and be loud for the final home match of the 2015 season. Go Big Red!
