NU Battles, Falls Short to Iowa

Iowa City, Iowa – The Nebraska women’s tennis team (12-6, 0-5 Big Ten) fell to Iowa (8-7, 2-3 Big Ten) today as the Hawkeyes battled to a 4-3 victory.  NU fought back from a 3-0 deficit, grabbing three points in singles competition, before the Hawkeyes sealed the match.

The Big Ten showdown was a battle from the beginning as Nebraska and Iowa split the sets in doubles competition.  

Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson teamed up at the No. 2 doubles spot to earn an NU victory defeating Iowa’s Katie Zordani and Zoe Douglas 8-4. The Big Red wasn’t able to hold on at the No. 1 and No. 3 spots, giving the Hawkeyes the early 1-0 advantage.

Singles action began with a couple Hawkeye victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, putting Iowa up 3-0. The Huskers didn’t let up, winning the No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 spots.

Mary Hanna battled through three sets with Iowa’s Annette Dohanics, coming out victorious, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. At the No. 4 spot, Katerina Matysova shut down Katie Zordani, 7-5, 6-3 while Andersson crushed Ellen Silver with a pair of 6-4 sets at the No. 5 spot.

With the Huskers and Hawkeyes all tied up at three, the final point was decided at the No. 6 spot as Mackenna Maddox battled Zoe Douglas. Douglas defeated Maddox with a pair of 6-4 sets to give Iowa the 4-3 victory on the day.

The Huskers continue its road-stretch as they head to Madison, Wis. on Friday, April 3 at 5 p.m. to take on Big Ten opponent, Wisconsin, before facing Minnesota on Sunday, April 5.
