Austin, Texas - Noah Gabel opened the outdoor track and field season for Nebraska by competing in the decathlon at the Texas Relays on March 25-26.
The redshirt freshman from Colorado Springs, Colo., scored 819 points with an 11.19 in the 100 meters to begin the day. He took fifth in the long jump with a leap of 22-9 (6.93) on his final attempt. After throwing 33-8 (10.26) in the shot put, Gabel finished seventh in the high jump at 6-6 1/4 (1.99). In the final event of the day, the 400m, Gabel was sixth with a run of 51.18.
On day two, Gabel ran 15.26 in the 110m hurdles and threw the discus 83-3 (25.37). With 4,864 points, he entered the pole vault competition in 14th place. However, a minor injury suffered during the pole vault warmup forced him to withdraw from the final three events of the decathlon.
