Hoosiers Outlast Huskers, 4-3

Lincoln, Neb. - The 64th ranked Nebraska women's tennis team (11-5, 0-4 Big Ten) battled it out until the very end against 52nd ranked Indiana this afternoon at the Vine Street Courts. The match was not decided until the final singles match.

The Huskers gained the early lead with two doubles wins. Nebraska earned the early 1-0 advantage when Mary Hanna and Izabella Zgierska outlasted the team of Carolyn Chupa and Katie Klyczek (8-7) at the No. 1 spot, and Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Anderson defeated the duo of Kim Schmider and Alicia Kauss (8-5). The No. 3 team of Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox fell to Stephanie Smith and Shannon Murdy (4-8).

The Big Red carried over the momentum to gain victories in the No. 1 and No. 5 singles matches. Lehmicke served Klyczek (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 1 singles match and Matysova swept Chupa (6-2, 6-0).

Indiana came storming back with victories from their No. 2, No. 3 and No. 4 spots. The Hoosiers began climbing back into the competition when Gutierrez defeated Andersson (6-1, 6-1) and Murdy out-played Hanna (6-4, 6-0). The Hoosiers evened up the score when Kauss defeated Zgierska in the No. 2 singles match (6-4, 6-2).

The winner of this contest would be determined in the No. 6 singles match between Maddox and Smith. Maddox gained the early lead when she won game one (6-0). Smith battled back in game two and won (7-5). With the score tied and the matches tied, the winner of this game would determine the winner of the dual. Maddox and Smith battled back and forth before Smith earned the 6-4 victory in set three.

Smith's victory earned the Hoosiers the 4-3 victory.

The Huskers will now set their sights on Loyola Marymount as they hit the road to Los Angeles, Calif. to take on the Lions. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Mar. 25. Results can be found on Huskers.com following the match.
