No. 65 Huskers Take Over Kangaroos 7-0

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska men's tennis team took on the Missouri-Kansas City Kangaroos Saturday resulting in a 7-0 sweep for the Huskers with a win in every match. The team will continue play at 7 p.m. against the Omaha Mavericks with a 6-5 mark and a ranking of 65 thus far in the season. 

Begining strong at doubles, Andrew Dzulynsky and partner Marc Herrmann competed against the Kangaroo's Conner Edwards and Amaury Navette resulting in a 8-4 win at No. 3. Finishing up next was No. 1 where Dusty Boyer and Linus Erhart took on Mike Psarros and Airam Castellano resulting in an 8-5 finish. With the doubles point secure, No. 2 followed where Scott Elsass and Ford Zitsch competed against Uldis Gaismins and Andrey Smirnov taking the win also 8-4. 

In singles play, Linus Erhart started the team off with a win over Uldis Gaismins in two quick sets going 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3. 

Following, Chris Hobgarski took on Mike Psarros where Hobgarski took the first set 6-4 followed by another 6-1 win at No. 5, putting the Huskers at a 3-0 advantage over the Kangaroos. 

At No. 4 Andrew Dzulynsky began in a quick first set against Conner Edwards going 6-0. Competition became tight in the second set but Dzulynsky overcame his opponent resulting in a 7-5 finish and securing the win for the team. 

Dusty Boyer competed against Airam Castellano at No. 1 where Boyer took the first set 6-2 and found himself in a tight second. At 6-6, Boyer and Castellano took to a tie breaker resulting in a 7-4 finish in Boyer's favor, giving him a final score of 7-6(4) in the second set and taking the win.

Marc Herrmann finished next at No. 2 where he played a competitive Andrey Smirnov. They fought hard in the first set going 7-6(6) with Herrmann taking the win followed by 6-2 in the second set putting the Huskers at 6-0. 

Ford Zitsch saw his first singles competition of the season at No. 6 where he competed in a nail biting match against Amaury Navette. Zitsch took the first set 6-4 but followed the second with a loss of 0-6. In the final set, the two battled it out to result in a tie breaker where Zitsch pushed through and won the tie breaker 8-6 putting him at 7-6 in the third set, winning the match. 

"It was a good start with our doubles today and I think it set the tone for the match," said Coach McDermott. "I thought the guys played good tennis today and got things done on their own courts against a good team."

Following the day's competition, the team will take on the Omaha Mavericks at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Racquet Club.
