Huskers Edged By No. 43 Maryland

Lincoln, Neb. – The 61st-ranked Nebraska women’s tennis team fell to No. 43 Maryland today at the Vine Street Courts, moving the Huskers to 11-3 on the season. Maryland clenched the doubles point en route to sweeping the singles competition.

The Terrapins grabbed the early lead over the Huskers with wins at the No. 3 and No. 1 doubles spots. Mackenna Maddox and Katerina Matysova suffered an 8-2 loss to Olga and Natalya Bredikhina while Izabella Zgierska and Mary Hanna came up short, 8-5, against Welma Luus and Alexandra Stanova at the No. 1 Spot. Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson teamed up at the No. 2 spot but did not finish after Maryland clenched the point.

The Terrapins did not slow down during singles competition as Lehmicke dropped a pair of 6-2 sets at the No. 1 spot to Stanova and Zgierska fell short, 6-0, 6-2 to Tour at the No. 2 spot. At the No. 3 spot Hanna battled through a long second-set tie-breaker but couldn’t come away with the win, dropping 6-4, 7-6 (13) to Maryland’s N. Bredikhina.

Andersson was defeated by Luus at the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-0 while Matysova came up short at the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 7-5 to Maryland’s O. Bredikhina. Maddox battled through three sets at the No. 6 spot but the Terps came away with the win, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 1-0 (12).

The Huskers will hit the road for the first time this season as they head to East Lansing, Mich. to take on Big Ten opponent, Michigan State Sunday, March 15 at 10 a.m. Results can be found here on Huskers.com following the match.
