NU Surges Past Eagles for Fourth Straight Win

Lincoln, Neb. -  The Nebraska women's tennis team continued its season-opening winning streak with a 6-1 victory over Eastern Michigan Sunday at the Nebraska Tennis Center.

Nebraska, which improved to 4-0 on the young season, gained the early doubles point as they swept the Eagles at all three doubles spots. NU remains undefeated against the Eagles, going 11-0 for the all-times series. 

Senior Izabella Zgierska and junior Maggy Lehmicke teamed up at the No. 1 spot to earn a 6-3 victory over Eastern Michigan's Klara Supejova and Andrea Martinovska.

Spurti Shivalingaiah and Lisa Andersson also captured a 6-3 win over Ani Gogvadze and Maria Paula Ribero while Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox battled through the tie breaker to earn a 7-6 (4) win over Daphne Friedrichs and Alejandra Barcelo. 

Singles action began with a quick win by Andersson as she outplayed Martinovska, 6-0, 6-3 at the No. 3 spot as Zgierska battled Gogvadze and came away with the 7-5, 6-4 victory. At the No. 1 spot, Lehmicke and Supejova went head-to-head, battling through three sets ending in an Eastern Michigan win, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.

Redshirt freshmen Spurti Shivalingaiah and Katerina Matysova both earned wins at the No. 4 and 5 spots. Shivalingaiah went 6-1, 6-4 over Friedrichs as Matysova won with a pair of 6-3 sets. Maddox and Renu Sharma battled through three sets ending in a 6-3, 0-6, 10-4 victory for Maddox.

The Huskers return to the Lincoln Racquet Club this coming Valentine's weekend as they take on Colorado State Friday, Feb. 13 at 4 p.m. before facing the Missouri Tigers on Sunday, Feb. 15 at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
