NU Defeats No. 51 Denver

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska women’s tennis team improved to 10-0 on the season as they defeated No. 51 Denver, 6-1, Friday at the Lincoln Racquet Club. The Huskers outplayed the Pioneers, earning the early doubles point, followed by wins at five of the six singles spots.

The Big Red nabbed its fourth straight doubles point to give the Huskers a 1-0 lead over the Pioneers. Maggy Lehmicke teamed up with Lisa Andersson at the No. 2 spot to earn an 8-5 win over Morgan Barnhill and Michelle Garpenlov.

Pioneers' Sonja Radosevic and Evy Van Genechten outscored Mackenna Maddox and Katerina Matysova, 8-5, at the No. 3 spot, leaving it up to Izabella Zgierska and Mary Hanna to clench the doubles point as they defeated Maureen Slattery and Julia O'Loughlin, 8-6. 

Singles action began as Lehmicke scorched Slattery at the No. 1 spot with a 6-3, 6-1 win to earn her a 7-3 record on the season while Matysova grabbed a quick 6-1, 6-3 win at the No. 6 spot over Barnhill.

With NU leading Denver 3-0, Shivalingaiah secured the win with her 6-2, 6-4 victory over Van Genechten at the No. 4 spot, keeping the redshirt freshman undefeated (10-0) on the season. Zgierska battled Denver’s Radosevic through three sets at the No. 2 spot, coming away on top with a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 win.

The Huskers grabbed one more point as Andersson challenged Denver’s Derbyshire to a three-set battle, ending in a 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (11) NU victory at the No. 5 spot.

“One of the things we try and do is get the team to believe that they’re better than they think they are,” said Nebraska head coach Scott Jacobson. “Today was a good indication; when you beat a team that’s No. 51 in the nation. Today did wonders for our confidence and we have a great match on Sunday so it should be exciting.”

The Huskers will take on No. 29 Wichita State this Sunday, March 1 at noon at the Nebraska Tennis Center to round out the weekend. Results following the match will be posted here on Huskers.com as well as live stats by clicking here. Go Big Red!
