Huskers Weather Red Storm, 5-2

Lincoln, Neb. - The Husker women’s tennis team (9-0) continued their undefeated streak with a 5-2 win over St. John’s (5-3) Wednesday, Feb. 25 at the Lincoln Racquet Club. The match came down to the wire, but the Huskers pulled out the victory.

The Huskers gained the early lead with two doubles wins. Nebraska earned the early 1-0 advantage when Mary Hanna and Izabella Zgierska defeated the team of Anna Morozova and Natalie Vavulina 8-7 (1) at the No. 1 spot, and Katerina Matysova and Mackenna Maddox defeated Anastasia Polyakova and Irina Preotescu 8-5 at the No. 3 Spot. The No. 2 team of Maggy Lehmicke and Lisa Andersson were upset by Zofia Stanisz and Jaide Collins, 6-8.

In singles action, the Huskers began with a bang when Spurti Shivalingaiah defeated Stanisz in three sets (0-6, 6-0, 6-1) at the No. 4 spot and Matysova swept Collins (6-1, 6-4) at the No. 6 spot.

Saint Johns came storming back with wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles matches. Morozova beat Zgierska (3-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Vavulina held on to win the battle against Hanna (6-0, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3).

The dual in the No. 5 singles between Andersson and Preotescu determined the winner. Andersson swept Preotescu in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to give the Huskers the victory.

Lehmicke and Polyakova closed out the day with their play at the No. 1 spot. Lehmicke finished off the Red Storm with identical 6-3 victories.

 The Nebraska women’s tennis team will now set their sights on Denver, who will visit the Lincoln Racquet Club on Friday, Feb. 27. The matches are set to begin at 11 a.m. with doubles play.
