No. 66 Huskers Snag Win Against No. 65 Broncos 4-3

Eugene, Ore. - The No. 66 Nebraska men's tennis team took on the No. 65 Santa Clara Broncos on Saturday where they took the W going 4-3 overall. The Huskers continue their season 3-4 and look forward to having their first home meet next weekend. 

The Broncos began the competition earning the doubles point in some tight matches. Marc Herrmann and Andrew Dzulynsky took a win over Sebastien Mathieu and Michael Standifer finishing 6-2 at No. 3. Bradford Zitsch and Scott Elsass took on the No. 1 position where they competed against Ashot Khacharyan and Mikheil Khmiadashvili going 6-4. At No. 2, Dusy Boyer and Linus Erhart also finished with a 6-4 loss against the Bronco's Ilya Osintsev and Sam Bertram. 

"A good win, especially after losing a very tough doubles point that got away from us," said Coach McDermott. "Our team did a great job of staying positive and fighting through every singles match for our team."

In singles play, Chris Hobgarski started the team off on the right foot with a quick win over Max Heerinckx finishing with an impressive 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 followed by another win from Linus Erhart at No. 4. Erhart went 6-1, 6-3 over the Bronco's Sam Bertram.

Vasileios Stavropoulos put the hammer down at No. 6 giving the team a 3-1 advantage. Stavropoulos competed against Sebastien Mathiew where he went 6-1, 6-2. 

At No. 2 Dusty Boyer sealed the win in hard fought matches where he went 6-3 in the first and 7-5 in the second against Ilya Osintsev giving the Huskers a great advantange over the Broncos. 

Andrew Dzulynsky competed against Mikheil Khmiadashvili in a tough battle. Khmiadashvili took the point for the Broncos going 6-4 and a tight 7-6 over Dzulynsky at No. 3.

Fishing competition for the day, Marc Herrmann competed at No. 1 where he took on Ashot Khacharyan finishing in a loss 6-4, 6-7, 11-9 in very close play. This left the Huskers 4-3 over the Broncos resulting in a well earned victory. 

"It was a good team win and it was really great to see our team bounce back from the loss to Oregon yesterday," said Coach McDermott. "It was great to move forward like great teams do."

The Huskers continue their season in their first home matches of the season on Saturday, Feb. 28 against South Dakota State at 9 a.m. follwed by Creighton at 6 p.m. at the Lincoln Racquet Club. Live stats will be available as well as results following the competition here on huskers.com.
