AMES, Iowa – The Huskers took the track for the second day of action at the Iowa State Classic on Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Nebraska was led by the 60-meter hurdlers and triple jumpers. Sean Pille and Morgan Smith both finished in the top five in the 60-meter hurdles. Pille posted a time of 8.04 to earn a third-place finish. Smith ran an 8.81 to place fifth on the women's side.
In the men’s triple jump, both Corey Winston and Connor Turnage earned top-five finishes for the Huskers. Winston notched a season-best leap of 47-5 3/4 to finish fourth, while Turnage cleared 47-4 1/2 to finish fifth. For the Nebraska women, Danielle Jones notched a fifth-place finish with a leap of 38-9 1/2.
Sam Bransby ran a PR 48.22 in the 400 meters to finish seventh. Mike McCann finished ninth in the high jump at 6-8 3/4, and Grant Gehlen also cleared 6-8 3/4 to finish 10th. McCann’s leap tied a season best, and Gehlen’s jump was a new PR.
Connor Gibson ran a 4:04.46 mile, the best mile time by a Husker this season and good for 18th place. Nolan Border notched a mile time of 4:10.91 to set a new personal record by nearly five seconds. Haley Harsin posted a 2:12.56 in the 800 meters to win her section of the event with the best Husker time this season.
The Nebraska 4x400-meter relay teams closed out the meet with two top-10 finishes. The men’s team of Mark Jarecki, Jake Nelson, Andrew Neal and Sam Bransby posted a sixth-place finish with a time of 3:15.71. The women’s team of Kristen Dowell, Haley Harsin, Morgan Smith and Morgan Woitzel ran a 3:52.50 and finished in 10th.
The Huskers will now turn their focus to the Nebraska Tune-Up on Friday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Indoor Track, as they go through one more meet before the Big Ten Indoor Championships Feb. 27-28 in Geneva, Ohio.
