Huskers Continue Dominance in Texas

The No. 1 Nebraska women's bowling team returned to its winning ways by capturing the tournament title at the Prairie View A&M Invitational in Arlington, Texas, Sunday.

The Huskers wrapped-up the three-day-event by defeating Fairleigh Dickinson 4-3 in the best-of-seven Baker format championship match. The victory gave Nebraska its third consecutive PVAMU Invitational crown.

Nebraska Head Coach Bill Straub said the Huskers were fortunate to pull off the victory after trailing Fairleigh Dickinson heading into the final day of competition. In the tournament format, all previous standings were thrown out for Sunday's Baker format tournament play.

''We have had good fortune here. I was impressed with the team's resiliency over the weekend. I would rather lose though because the tournament format is not very fair,” Straub said. “ FDU beat us head-to-head and beat us in pinfall. But then we threw out everything-- and won in the tournament portion---still we will take the victory.”

Straub added that the Huskers did not have their best 'shot-making' weekend, but they did hit the shots when they really mattered the most.

“We didn't have a very good event, we had some real good portions of the event, but our shot-making wasn't good. We were fortunate to have won.”

Leading the way for NU was sophomore Gazmine Mason and senior Andrea Ruiz. Mason finished 12th in the individual standings, compiling a weekend average of 218.50 with a total pinfall of 1,311.

Ruiz also performed valiantly, after missing the Huskers' last tournament while competing in her home country of Colombia for a spot on the Colombian National Team. Ruiz finished 16th individually, compiling an average of 215.60 over the weekend.

NU started off tournament play Sunday against Arkansas State, as the Huskers made quick work of the Red Wolves, defeating ASU 4-0 in Baker format.

The Huskers then faced-off with Fairleigh Dickinson, as it would take the full allotted seven games for NU do edge out FDU, for the tournament crown.

The Huskers will take a week off from competition before they travel back to Texas for the Stephen F. Austin Jacks Invite held in Houston, Feb. 13-15.
