Huskers Sweep Eastern Illinois 7-0

Des Moines, Iowa - The Nebraska men's tennis team rolled to its first win of the season with a 7-0 sweep of Eastern Illinois at the Knapp Tennis Center on Saturday.

The Big Red gained the doubles point with a win from Dusty Boyer and Bradford Zitsch against Robert Skolik and Preston Touliatos in a close match at the No. 1 spot ending 7-5. At the No. 2 position, Scott Elsass and Linus Erhart competed against Ryan Henderson and Rui Silva taking the match 6-4 and at No. 3 Marc Herrmann and Chris Hobgarski played Grant Thompson and David Constantinescu winning 6-3. 

In singles play, Dusty Boyer competed against the Panther's Grant Thompson at the No. 1 spot where he won the first match 6-4 and fought through a second, taking the point 7-5.

At the No. 2 position, Marc Herrmann took on Touliatos where he went 6-2, 6-2. Andrew Dzulynsky took the win at No. 3 against Skolik going 6-3, 6-4. Erhart grabbed two quick wins in both sets going 6-1, 6-1 against his junior opponent Henderson. 

At the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, Hobgarski and Vasileios Stavropoulos kept their victories going. Hobgarski competed against Rui Silva where he finished 6-2, 6-2 and Stavropoulos played Grant Reiman going 6-4, 6-1. 

"We had very good energy from the start of the match which was good to see since we played last night withough a lot of recovery time to get ready for this match," Coach Kerry McDermott said. "It was good to see the team get their first win and we played some solid tennis. Eastern Illinois did a good job with their doubles line up and they gave us a good challenge. I thought our singles played pretty well and it was good to be able to finish all of the matches and play a compete match. It is time now to get ready for Denver next weekend and be ready for battle as they are a well coached team and we are anxious to keep improving."

The Huskers continue their season on Saturday, Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Denver, Colo., when they face the Pioneers. Results will be posted here on huskers.com following the match.
