Lincoln, Neb.--The No. 9 Nebraska men's gymnastics team earned its first victory of the season, overcoming No. 13 Army at home 421.750-412.800.
The Huskers took control of the night by putting up season-best team scores on four events, earning 10 total individual career highs and taking home four event titles in its home opener.
Daniel Leal led the way for the Big Red, notching career bests on three events. Leal took home event titles on rings (14.20) and parallel bars (14.60), the first of his career. The freshman also scored personal bests on pommel horse (14.20) and high bar (13.65) en-route to the team’s first season win.
In an unusual format, the Huskers began on floor simultaneously with Army as each team alternated between competitors. NU put up a big 71.650 on the event, paced by Kyle King’s event-winning 14.60. Sophomore Coleman Tokar achieved a personal-best 14.50 for his performance, while classmate Austin Epperson followed closely with a 14.50.
Nebraska then moved to pommel horse for the second rotation with Army where the teams continued the alternating pattern. Junior Ethan Lottman picked up his first event title of the season, posting a season-best 14.85 for NU. Leal and Sophomore Travis Gollott put up matching 14.20 marks, while King and senior Andrew House added a pair of 14.10s to round out the rotation to a season-high 71.450. After two rotations, the Huskers held a 143.100-139.650 lead over the Black Knights.
The meet switched back over to normal competition in the third rotation, with Army on vault as NU went to rings. The team overcame minor struggles to earn a 68.200 in the event, powered by Leal’s winning 14.20 performance. Freshman Alex Magsam put up a respectable 13.65 for his effort, followed by a career-high 13.60 from Redshirt freshman Brenon Sommers. Tokar pitched in another personal best mark of 13.30 to round out the team total.
The Huskers slipped behind Army heading into the fourth rotation as the team moved to vault. Junior Sam Chamberlain set the tone with his stuck landing, tying his career high of 14.75. Gollott continued the momentum with his 14.40 mark, as Klein chipped in a 13.85 in his season debut on vault. The Huskers totaled a 70.300 for the event and regained the lead 281.600-277.750 after four rotations.
NU continued to build on the energy as the team went to parallel bars, where the Huskers achieved a season-best 70.950. Leal took home the crown with his career high 14.60 score. All-American Chamberlain followed closely behind with a 14.55, as Stephenson pitched in a 14.35 for the Big Red.
In the last rotation of the night, the Huskers finished out the meet on high bar paced by Stephenson’s career-best 14.20 mark. Klein posted a solid 14.15, while Leal and Lottman notched a pair of 13.65s to bring the event total to 69.200.
Nebraska concluded the meet with a new season-best team score, defeating Army 421.750-412.800. Army’s Jesse Glenn won the vault (15.00) and all-around (84.800) titles, while Leo Genders took home the high bar crown (14.35) for the Black Knights.
The Huskers return to action on the road on Feb. 7 for the John Roethlisberger Iceberg Invite hosted by No. 10 Minnesota. The meet will also feature No. 17 University of Illinois-Chicago and will take place on Saturday, Feb. 7 in Minneapolis, Minn. Competition can be viewed online via BTN Plus* at btn2go.com.
