Nebraska Defeats Air Force in Home Opener

Lincoln, Neb. - The Nebraska women's tennis team went 5-2 against Air Force in the first match of the 2015 season at the Lincoln Racquet Club. The Huskers swept the Falcons in doubles play, gaining the early point, followed by four singles wins en route to a 5-2 overall victory.

The doubles sweep began with junior Maggy Lehmicke and redshirt freshman Spurti Shivalingaiah defeating Natasha Rizvi and Jocelle Rudico, 6-4 at the No. 2 spot. Senior Izabella Zgierska teamed up with sophomore Mary Hanna at the No. 1 position for a 7-6 (7-5) win over Tracey Landram and Mary Meyers. With the doubles point secured, junior Mackenna Maddox and redshirt freshman Katerina Matysova won the tie breaker, going 7-6 (7-3). 

Singles play began with two NU victories as Lehmicke ousted Rizvi, 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Zgierska scorched Air Force's Meyers in a 6-3, 6-0 wn. C. Forlini defeated Hanna at the No. 3 position, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 as Landram bested Andersson, 6-4, 6-4. NU earned two more victories as Matysova won in a two-set tie-breaker, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2, over Rudico at the No. 6 spot and Shivalingaiah out-played Lily Forlini in a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. 

The Huskers continue play into the afternoon, facing Army at 2:30 p.m.
