The seventh-ranked Nebraska rifle team fell to top-ranked West Virginia in its first match of 2015 on Saturday. The final score was 4,680-4,704.
In smallbore, Rachel Martin, Denise Martin and Lauren Phillips fired high scores for the Huskers. R. Martin finished with a 585, while D. Martin and Phillips each ended with a score of 584. The team finished with a 2,328 in smallbore.
The Huskers were behind the Mountaineers after the first discipline and made a valiant effort in air rifle to come back and get the victory. Jaycee Carter led the way in air rifle, tying her career-best score of 593. Rachel Martin shot a 590 and Denise Martin tallied a 587. Nebraska’s final air rifle score was 2,352, but it wasn’t enough to overcome West Virginia.
The Mountaineers were led by Jean-Pierre Lucas in smallbore and Ziva Dvorsak in air rifle. Lucas fired a 587 and Dvorsak tallied a 597. West Virginia finished with a 2,334 in smallbore and a 2,370 in air rifle.
The Huskers will stop in Ohio to compete against Akron on Sunday. The match is set to begin at 8 am.
