The Nebraska cross country team competed in its last meet of the season at the NCAA Midwest Regional Friday afternoon in Peoria, Ill. The men's team finished 20th out of 29 teams, while the women's team finished 29th out of 32 teams’ total.
The Huskers finished behind meet champions Oklahoma State on the men's side, and Iowa State on the women's.
Head Coach David Harris was disappointed in how the team performed today, noting that the team did not bring the same intensity it brought at last years regional, or even at the Big Ten Championships this season.
“Unlike last year when I felt like the men's team really competed hard and performed really well, we just did not—try enough today,” Harris said. “We don't seem to get out in races very well, and that has been a real problem for us this season, on both the men's and women's teams. We did not get out and hold our positions well today—at all.”
Harris added that not having a runner finish in the top-50 was the biggest disappointment today.
“We did not have anyone place above the top-50 today, and that hurts not getting any of those low points,” Harris said. “You cant start at such a high point like we did today, and then try and battle back, passing 100 runners.”
Leading the way for the women's team was sophomore Anna Peer. A native of Bettendorf, Iowa, Peer placed 55th with a time of 21:21.4, falling short of her quest to reach the NCAA Championships.
On the men's side, sophomore Joe Harter led the way for NU, placing 76th with a time of 31:17.8. Junior Jonah Heng also performed valiantly for the Huskers, as he finished 95th with a time of 31:32.1.
With the results of the races, both the men's team and the women's team will not be competing at the NCAA Championships next Saturday. With only Connor Gibson, Sarah Larson and Shawnice Williams departing this years Nebraska cross country team, the future is bright.
