On the importance of tackling against Wisconsin
“That’s very big. That’s probably the key to winning this football game. We know he (Melvin Gordon) can get the ball a lot, and he’s good in open field and he’s good running through the tackles. Getting him down will be a big part of our success for this week.”
On Nate Gerry playing safety this season
“I would like to think he’s enjoying it. He’s having a good season so far. It’s not a surprise because we knew how talented he was going into the year. I’m just glad that he’s back there, he’s making some big plays.”
On the importance of the Wisconsin game
“This game is huge. To get to where we want to go we can’t afford any losses pretty much. It’s pretty much the biggest game of the season.”
On what weight the 2012 game plays in this week’s matchup
“It’s completely different teams. I mean I was there but a lot of cats on the team weren’t there in 2012. For me, I still got a bitter taste in my mouth from when we got beat pretty bad, but this is a big game. We are pretty much playing for a chance to go to the Big Ten Championship. What happened in 2012 is pretty much irrelevant. We just need to focus on the team now, like I said, it’s a huge game so everyone will be ready to go.”
On how much he played in the 2012 game
“Special teams and I played a few snaps on defense.”
On the similarities in Wisconsin’s offense
“They don’t change a whole lot, so there’s no secrets as to what they want to do. They’re a running team and they occasionally throw some deep balls to catch you sleeping. It’s no secret, it’s going to be a physical football game, and it comes down to the more physical team will probably win.”
On playing the deep ball against Wisconsin
“Basically just not falling asleep, keeping your eyes on the right place, don’t try to make somebody else’s play, just doing your job. It’s pretty much that simple.”
On what he did during the bye week
“Obviously we had the weekend off, but I watched some film. I actually watched their game this last weekend against Purdue. It was good to get a couple days off and just sit back and watch.”
On whether Melvin Gordon will be the best running back they’ll face all year
“Yeah, pretty easily.”
On what makes Melvin Gordon so good
“He can do it all. He can make guys miss in the open field, he can run between the tackles, he’s explosive. There’s not much he can’t do. Like I said, it’s going to come down to tackling and getting 11 guys to him because he’s a tough guy to tackle one on one.”
On how much Corey Clement complements Melvin Gordon
“He’s also a really good player as well. When Melvin (Gordon) comes out of the game it’s not really a big step back. Both of those guys are good and that pretty much makes them who they are. They've always got two guys who can make big plays for them, so we’ve got to be prepared for both of them.”
On why Nebraska struggles on the road against ranked teams
“I can’t think of anything specifically but it comes down to showing up ready to play. It don’t matter if we are home or away. It’s just a decision that we have to make to come out there and execute and be the more physical team.”
On whether he thought the team showed up ready to go against Michigan State
“I thought we were ready to go. Things happen, we got down and we didn’t give up, we kept fighting. But I can’t explain why we start slow sometimes, we can’t afford that this weekend.”
On playing in cold weather
“It can get pretty painful, but like I said it’s a big game. Those juices get to flowing and you don’t really feel it too much, it should be fun.”
On Wisconsin testing the defense
“It is hard to tell, but I sure hope so. It is an opportunity to make plays.”
On the atmosphere at Wisconsin
“I’m sure it will be live. Last time we went there it was a great environment to play in. Their fans are always into it. Our fans travel with us, so I expect it to be a good atmosphere. The stadium will be rocking on Saturday.”
On playing for a trophy
“I just found out about that trophy. But I would consider it a rivalry game considering every time we meet each other it is something big. This year is no different.”
