Former Husker women's golf coach Jerry Fisher will be inducted into the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame on Monday, Sept. 29, in ceremonies at the Country Club of Lincoln.
Fisher is part of a three-person Hall of Fame class that includes 1989 British Open champion Mark Calcavecchia and Mike Klein of Kimball. The Omaha World Herald's Stu Pospisil and Bruce Gilliland of Kimball also will be honored with the hall's Dr. Herbert H. Davis Special Recognition Award.
Fisher, who was the longtime PGA professional at the Country Club of Lincoln, coached the Nebraska women's golf program from 1979 to 1987. Under Fisher, the Huskers captured 12 tournament titles, including the 1981 AIAW Region Six championship and the 1983 Big Eight Tournament title. He served as the head golf pro at the Country Club of Lincoln from 1972 to 1987.
In his eight seasons as the head coach, Fisher guided six Husker golfers to 10 All-Big Eight awards, including Jan Stanard (1981, 1983), Cathy Nelson (1982, 1983), Shelly Godeken (1983, 1984), Kari Mangan (1985, 1986), Jean Gilpin (1986), and Laura Gunia (1987). Mangan was also the Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year in 1986.
Current Nebraska Coach Robin Krapfl spent three seasons as an assistant under Fisher before becoming NU's third head coach before the 1987-88 season. Krapfl, who is in her 28th season as the Huskers' head coach, also played collegiately at Nebraska for Fisher.
