Lightning Halts SMU/Dallas Invite

Dallas - Lightning forced the cancellation of the final round of the SMU/Dallas Invitational on Sunday, leaving the Nebraska women's golf team in a tie for 13th in the 16-team field.

The third round of the tournament was scratched 45 minutes into the round on Sunday morning due to lightning in the Dallas area. After an hour delay prior to the first tee shot of the day due to lightning, players got up to three holes in, before the horn sounded again to halt play.

Sophomore Cassie Deeg fired a three-over-par 75 on the 6,257-yard layout at the Dallas Athletic Club on Saturday to close the weather-shortened tournament in a tie for 44th at 156. She was joined in a tie for 44th by senior teammate Steffi Neisen, who added a 77 for NU's second-best score in the second round.

Freshman Jordan Chael and senior Katelyn Wright rounded out Nebraska's team score on the second day with rounds of 78 to help the Huskers post a 308. NU's second round marked an 11-stroke improvement of the Huskers' opening round, as Nebraska closed the tournament with a two-round total of 627 in a tie for 13th place with Purdue. The Huskers were just eight strokes out of ninth place (619) in the 16-team field that features eight of the top-50 teams in the nation, when lightning forced the cancellation of Sunday's final round.

No. 48 Baylor won the tournament with a two-round total of 591 that included a second-round 297. However, No. 18 LSU narrowed the gap on the Lady Bears with a 294 on Saturday to sit at 595, just four strokes back. No. 29 North Carolina finished third at 597.

The Tar Heels' Elizabeth Mallett fired the tournament's best individual round on Saturday with a three-under-par 69. She claimed medalist honors with a two-round total of 141, five strokes in front of five other golfers tied for second at 146.
