Huskers Continue Spring Drills

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team practiced for two hours in full pads inside the Hawks Championship Center on Wednesday as the Huskers continued spring workouts.

Head Coach Bo Pelini addressed the media following practice, highlighting that the Huskers are continuing to implement details on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball in preparation for the Spring Game on Saturday, April 12.

“We've had a lot of installation over the last two weeks," Pelini said. "I think our guys are to the point where they know what to do. Now we need to get into the details and the fine points that are going to allow them to have success."

In addition, Pelini commented on the Huskers’ growth on the defensive line, including sophomore Malik Collins. The Kansas City, Mo., native will continue to be looked to as a leader among an impressive group of young defensive lineman.

"Malik (Collins) has really had a good camp," Pelini said. "I think our young defensive linemen are really getting better. Kevin Maurice is doing some good things, and Vincent Valentine has really flashed at times. End to end, this group is way ahead of where they were last year."

The Huskers will have their second live scrimmage of the season tomorrow as the coaches continue to see growth and competition at various positions.

“I'm seeing progress on both sides," Pelini said. "I'm seeing guys who are competing, and I think it's been a productive seven practices to this point. We'll scrimmage tomorrow night and go from there."

Pelini also addressed junior Ryne Reeves’ injury at practice, stating that the Huskers were taking precautionary measures after Reeves had been complaining of neck pain.

“Fortunately, Ryan Reeves' dad was here," Pelini said. "Ryan was having pain in his neck, and anytime you have pain in your neck, we're going to treat it with caution. We think it's precautionary, but we're going to make sure we find out exactly what's going on."

The Huskers return to the practice field on Thursday for their final practice before Spring Break. The squad will return to practice on March 31 in preparation for its Spring Game, set for Saturday, April 12, at 2 p.m.
