Huskers Fire Best Round at Clover Cup

Mesa, Ariz. - Katelyn Wright finished sixth and helped the Nebraska women's golf team post the best team score of the final round with a 293 on its way to an eighth-place finish at the Clover Cup on Sunday.

Wright fired a two-over-par 74 for the second straight day on the 6,209-yard layout at the Longbow Golf Course in Mesa, Ariz. The senior from Incline Village, Nev., closed the tournament with a three-round score of 220 (72-74-74).

While Wright produced Nebraska's best tournament finish, freshman Jordan Chael notched the Huskers' best round of the tournament with a one-under-par 71 on Sunday. Chael, whose second round did not count because of an incorrect scorecard, helped the Huskers break out of a three-way tie for ninth and finish eighth with a three-round total of 903 (300-310-293).

Sophomore Cassie Deeg added her best round of the tournament with a 73, while sophomore Cassidy Stelzmiller also carded her top 18-hole score of the tournament with a 75. Senior Steffi Neisen added a final-round 77 to tie Deeg in 31st place (228) for the tournament. Stelzmiller finished in a tie for 67th (238) in the 87-player field.

Sophomore Morgan Smejkal, who played as an individual outside the Husker lineup, managed an 80 over the final 18 holes to finish in a tie for 74th at 241.

Louisville claimed the team title with a three-round total of 888 that included a final-round 297. The Cardinals held off the hosts from Notre Dame, who finished as the runner-up just one shot back at 889 after a final-round 294. Colorado, which led the tournament after each of the first two rounds, finished third at 893 after settling for a final-round 304. Mississippi and Michigan tied for fourth at 896, while UNLV finished sixth at 898. East Carolina finished seventh at 902, just one shot ahead of the Huskers.

Notre Dame's Kristina Nihm took medalist honors with a three-round total of 213 that included a final-round 73. Michigan's Grace Choi and Colorado's Jennifer Coleman tied for second, finishing just one shot back at 214.

The Huskers return to Arizona for their third consecutive spring tournament at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz., March 28-29.
