The No. 4 Nebraska rifle team fired an air rifle score of 2,361 to set a new school record on Sunday in Murray, Ky., at the NCAA Qualifiers. There were seven teams at the competition and the Huskers finished second, behind top ranked West Virginia. The team finished with a total team score of 4,678.
“What an incredible end to our qualifying season,” Coach Underwood said. “We finished strong, with a new school record in air rifle.”
Lauren Phillips and Denise Martin paved the way for Nebraska in smallbore and got the Huskers off to a strong start. Phillips finished with a 586, the second-highest overall score of the day in smallbore, while Martin scored a 584. Nebraska finished with a 2,317 in smallbore.
Rachel Martin and Denise Martin led the Huskers in air rifle with two scores over 590. R. Martin tallied a 593, which was the fourth-highest score of the day, while D. Martin ended with 591.
“I just can't say enough about how much I love this team and the way they compete for themselves and for their teammates,” Underwood said. “They have put a tremendous amount of work into perfecting the physical skills, but even more work into becoming great teammates.
The top eight teams to advance to the NCAA Championships will be announced after official results are released on Thursday.
Nebraska will spend the week preparing for the GARC Championships this upcoming weekend in Oxford, Miss. Smallbore individuals will take place on Friday, air rifle individuals will take place on Saturday and team competition will occur on Sunday.
