On being a former Purdue recruit and heading back this weekend
“It’s a big week for me, I committed there and knew a lot of guys there from high school. I was real good friends with the staff there before Coach (Danny) Hope left. I went to a lot of games there and have a lot of friends who went to school there. It’s a big game for me, I hope we can go in there, play well and come out with the W.”
On the biggest key to the defenses success in the 39-19 win over Illinois Saturday
“I think the biggest thing for us was that we really played our game and did a good job of executing our plays. I don’t know if anyone outside locker room could notice that, but the first four games we really weren’t doing that and this game I think we did a really good job of executing and keeping our heads up, staying motivated, keeping the energy going and I think it really showed on the field.”
On Coach Pelini not feeling like he has to blitz
“A big part of it is that we have a lot more athleticism on the D-line and Coach (Rick Kaczenski) Kaz does a good job of coaching us on our technique. I think Coach Bo is right, I think we can blitz less and use the defensive line more as far as rushing the passer. I think as a defense we do blitz pretty well when we want to and hopefully he won’t get away from that and we can do that a little more but he is definitely right.”
On his journey to Nebraska after being a former Purdue commit
“I was at Arizona Western and my freshman year I had a pretty good year. I still intended on going to Purdue after my freshman year. After I got hurt my first game of my sophomore year, Coach (Rick Kaczenski) Kaz called me, I talked to him and had a good conversation. I set up an official visit, came here and really enjoyed. I wanted to commit on the spot but felt like I wanted to do it the right way. I talked to the staff at Purdue and told them how I felt about everything and then committed here. Lucky for me, the staff (at Purdue) got fired that same weekend and it kind of made it easier for me.”
On why he committed to Purdue
“The history they had at the defensive end. I was a big Ryan Kerrigan fan. He is doing pretty well in the NFL. I would always go to the games to see him play and always envisioned myself out there. Just the fact that it was an in-state school and all my friends and family could see me play.”
On being thrilled to see Purdue on this year’s schedule
“It was a big plus seeing them on the schedule and being able to play against them and being able to play against some of the kids that I actually went on visits with and hung out with when I was down there. (Purdue) actually has a kid that I went to junior college with that starts on the offensive line, so it will be kind of cool to go against him.”
On this being a first good road game for the Huskers
“Definitely. I think the schedule helped out the defense a lot this year. The more I think about it, you’re right, it really has helped us out as far as getting comfortable with the defense. We got a lot of new faces out there and it was really important for us to go out there and get a lot of reps. I think it was really important for us as we get ready for this final stretch of the season.”
On the environment at Purdue
“It’s a lot different than here. Our fans travel pretty well. They haven’t been able to fill up there stadium for a while, so we might be able to have just as much red as they have black and gold.”
On Purdue starting a true freshman quarterback
“It’s definitely a little more exciting. I want to get after every quarterback but the fact that he’s a freshman I think kind of makes it a little more fun for us and hopefully we can rattle him a little bit, hit him a few times, shake him up a little bit and make him uncomfortable.”
On making Illinois quarterback Nate Scheelhaase uncomfortable on Saturday
“He sat in the pocket a lot of times on film and was able to go through his progressions. I think we did a good job of being able to get into his face and getting the O-line in his face and getting into the pocket.”
