Deeg Ties for Fifth at UNLV

Las Vegas - Cassie Deeg fired an even-par 72 in the final round to finish in a tie for fifth individually and lead the Nebraska women's golf team at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Tuesday.

Deeg, a sophomore from Hugo, Minn., finished the weather-shortened two-round event at one-under-par 143, five strokes behind individual medalist Sirene Blair (71-67-138) from San Diego State. Central Florida's Ashley Holder took second at 140.

With Deeg leading the way, Nebraska ended in a tie for 10th in a deep and talented 17-team field on the par-72, 6,261-yard layout at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club. The Huskers finished with a two-round total of 595 (295-300), just 16 strokes behind the team champions from San Diego State (290-289-579). The hosts from UNLV tied for second along with Central Florida and Texas Tech at 581.

In a field that featured all 17 teams among the top 115 in the GolfStat rankings, the Huskers finished just nine shots out of fifth.

NU's team round of 300 on Tuesday included individual rounds of 76 by both senior Katelyn Wright and freshman Jordan Chael who tied each other for 40th at 150 in the 93-player field. Sophomore Morgan Smejkal added Nebraska's fourth score on day with a 76 of her own to finish in a tie for 78th at 158. Senior Steffi Neisen rounded out the Husker lineup with a final-round 80 to close the tournament in a tie for 75th at 156.

Nebraska will take the next four months off from competition before returning to action at the Westbrook Spring Invitational in Peoria, Ariz., Feb. 23-24.
