Homers Power Stanford Past Tulsa

Lincoln, Neb. - A pair of two-run homers powered the Stanford Cardinal to a 4-2 victory over the Tulsa Golden Hurricane in the opening game of the 2013 NCAA Lincoln Softball Regional at Bowlin Stadium on Friday.

Tulsa got a two-run homer of its own from Julie Kernen in the top of the first inning to grab an early 2-0 lead. But Stanford answered with Jessica Plaza's two-run homer one inning later. Kayla Bonstrom then put the Cardinal in front 4-2 with a fifth-inning two-run home run.

The pair of two-run homers were enough support for Stanford starter Teagan Gerhart, who fired a three-hitter and allowed only two runs. Gerhart improved to 20-11 with the win, while Stanford moved to 38-19 on the season and advanced to Saturday's winner's bracket game at 1 p.m. against either Nebraska or Northern Iowa.

Offensively, Bonstrom, the 2013 Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, had two hits, including the game-winning homer, in her postseason debut. Erin Ashby was also 2-for-2 and was hit by a pitch, reaching base safely in all three plate appearances.

Aimee Creger, the 2013 Conference USA Pitcher of the Year, took the loss for Tulsa (42-15-1), allowing four runs on five hits in 5.0 innings of work.
