Hooper's 32 Leads Huskers Past UNK

Lincoln - Jordan Hooper scored 26 of her game-high 32 points after halftime to lead the No. 18 Nebraska women's basketball team to a 68-38 exhibition win over Nebraska-Kearney on Sunday at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Hooper, a 6-2 junior forward from Alliance, Neb., finished with 32 points, nine rebounds, three steals, two blocks and an assist to give the Huskers their second exibition win of the week, following a 78-34 win over Pittsburg State on Oct. 29.

Senior point guard Lindsey Moore added 19 points, six assists, four rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the win.

The Huskers, who only had six players compete in the game, got seven points and seven rebounds from freshman Sadie Murren, and three points, eight rebounds and three assists from freshman Courtney Aitken. Both of NU's active freshmen played the full 40 minutes.

Junior center Adrianna Maurer added six points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots in a solid effort, while sophomore forward Katie Simon rounded out the NU contributors with one point, six rebounds and two assists.

Senior forward Meghin Williams did not play while nursing a foot injury, while five Huskers sat out the game because of a decision by Coach Connie Yori.

"We hold our players to a high standard of accountability," Yori said. "We expect our players to live up to those standards. They did not play today, and as long as they live up to the standards that we have set for our team, we do not expect to have any issues moving forward."

Freshman Laramey Lewis led the Lopers with nine points on 2-of-3 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 free throw shooting, while Ivy Jones added eight points, four boards and three assists.

For the game, Nebraska hit just 33.9 percent (20-59), including just 22.2 percent (6-27) from three-point range, but connected on 22-of-28 free throw attempts (.786). But NU held UNK to just 22 percent (13-59) shooting from the floor, including just 2-of-13 from long range. The Lopers did hit 10-of-12 free throws. UNK also outrebounded the Huskers, 47-44, but NU forced 22 turnovers while committing just 13 of their own.

Nebraska and UNK both got off to a slow start, as the Huskers led just 6-5 after the game's first nine minutes, as the two teams combined to go 4-for-28 from the field to open the game. NU led just 16-13 with 3:35 left in the first half.

Hooper did not find the scoring column until hitting her first jumper with 7:34 left in the half, but finished with six points and seven rebounds in the opening period to send NU to the locker room with a 26-17 halftime edge.

After scoring the final four points of the first half, the Huskers outscored UNK 18-2 in the first 5:09 of the second half to put the game out of reach. Hooper scored 13 of NU's 22 points in the seven-minute stretch to push NU's lead to 44-19 with 14:51 left. She added 14 more points in the game's final 10 minutes, including NU's last six points of the contest.

Nebraska opens regular-season action by playing host to North Carolina A&T on Friday, Nov. 9 at the Devaney Center. Tip-off between the Huskers and Aggies is set for 7:05 p.m.
