Kelly, Hirsch Lead White Squad to Game One Win

Lincoln - The Nebraska baseball team opened its annual Red-White Series on Tuesday afternoon at Hawks Field, with the White squad taking game one, 4-0.

The White team pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon in the six-inning game, as every hitter in the White lineup registered a hit. Sophomore Pat Kelly led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, including a triple, while true freshman Jake Placzek and junior Michael Pritchard each added a double. Redshirt freshman Austin Christensen led the White team with two RBI.

While the offense racked up the runs, starter Zach Hirsch limited the Red squad to just four hits over 4.1 innings of work before newcomer Christian DeLeon threw 1.2 innings of no-hit relief to secure the win.

The Red team had its best opportunity to score in the bottom of the second inning, as it loaded the bases with two outs following a pair of singles from Taylor Fish and Logan Thune. Bryan Peters came to the plate and lifted a shallow fly ball into left field, but Pritchard came on and made a diving catch to end the threat.

The Red-White series continues tomorrow with another six-inning game at 3:30 p.m. The series concludes on Thursday night at 6 p.m. The length of Thursday's game is yet to be determined.
