May and June were a slow time in the blog. The best time to catch up on rest and life if you live in the basketball world.
Since my last blog on April 11, a lot has happened around the Husker program. Kellie Lewis-Jay left an assistant coaching position at Nebraska to become the head coach at Florida Atlantic. Graduate assistant manager Bryce Currie ended his two-year stay at Nebraska with a second master's degree and his first full-time coaching job as an assistant at Florida Southern.
Video coordinator Shawn Gilbert also stepped away from the Husker staff to pursue a career in the private sector. All three members of our basketball staff will be missed after providing great commitment and contributions to our program.
Coach Yori and her staff have focused on moving forward with three great new additions. Shimmy Gray-Miller has filled the assistant coaching role on the Husker staff. The former head coach at Saint Louis worked with Associate Head Coach Sunny Smallwood at Washington, and Gray-Miller brings instant energy to the program.
Austin Thoms (pronounced TOMES) has recently stepped into the video coordinator/administrative assistant position. Thoms was a player collegiately at Concordia University in Seward, Neb., and Taylor University in Indiana. He recently completed his master's degree at Hawaii Pacific.
Former Husker great and Nebraska high school legend Dominique Kelley rounds out the 2012-13 staff. Kelley is one of the top 20 scorers in school history despite having her senior season cut short by a knee injury in 2010-11. Kelley, who earned her bachelor's degree as a broadcasting major in May of 2012, is a great leader and a better person. I can't wait to watch her as she begins to embark on her coaching career while pursuing a master's degree in education administration here at Nebraska.
In addition to getting a new job, Dominique also got married in mid-June, tying the knot with Clyde Johnson here in Lincoln. My family had a great time at Nique's wedding, and it was terrific to see so many former Huskers, like Cory Montgomery, Kala Kuhlmann, Nikki Bober and Margaret Richards, just to name a few. Cory also got married last weekend in Minnesota, while Kala gets married later this month.
The Husker basketball family just keeps growing.
