The regular season is here!  I am so excited about this season's Nebraska women's basketball team.  They are a group of young, talented, skilled, athletic and exceptional players who will be fun to watch as they grow together as a team.

In last Sunday's 85-55 exhibition game win over Nebraska-Kearney, 6-2 sophomore forward Jordan Hooper continued her blistering pre-season play with a game-high 28 points.  J-Hoop had a 24-point, 17-rebound effort one week earlier against Pittsburg State.  Ten Huskers scored in the game, including a 14-point effort from junior point guard Lindsey Moore, who also dished out seven assists.  From now on, every game counts and Nebraska opens the regular season campaign this Saturday afternoon against Arkansas Pine-Bluff.

UAPB struggled to a 1-28 record last season and are picked to repeat their 10th-place finish in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).  The Lady Lions lost their top two scorers and leading rebounder from last season.  Their roster has seven freshmen and only one senior.  Jenise Gentry, a 6-0 junior forward, averaged 8.8 points per game last year and is the top returning scorer for UAPB.  She started 21 of 29 games and was third on the team with 5.2 rebounds per game.

Chigozianyi Okwumabua, a 6-1 junior forward, started two games in 2010-11 and was selected as a pre-season second-team all-conference pick by one online publication.  She averaged 8.8 points and 5.4 rebounds per game last season.

Lakendra Marsh, a 5-3 junior guard, was the main three-point threat for UAPB last year.  She made 33-of-111 attempts and averaged 7.2 points per contest.  Christina Lasane, a 5-10 sophomore guard, started nine games last season and averaged 2.1 points per game.

Freshman Corredur Vaden, a 5-9 guard, rounds out UAPB's probable starting lineup.  A three-time all-state selection at Malvern High School, Vaden averaged 23 points per game in her senior season. She holds the Lady Leopards' school record with 1,842 career points.

Third-year Arkansas-Pine Bluff Head Coach Cary Shelton  likes to employ his entire bench and substitute freely during games. Shelton spent time in the U.S. Army before graduating from Arkansas State in 2005.  He previously spent four years as an assistant with both the men's and women's programs at UAPB.

The Huskers defeated UAPB 67-39 on Jan. 2, 2008 in the only previous meeting between the two teams.

In honor of Veterans Day Friday, the Nebraska men's and women's basketball programs have announced a special Military/Veterans Appreciation Promotion for this weekend's season openers for both teams.
