The Nebraska men’s tennis team had a busy day of action as they continued play at the USTA/ITA Indoor Championships in Flushing, N.Y., on Friday along with opening up play in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Gopher Invitational.
At the Indoor Championships in singles play, Georgia Tech’s No. 85 Kevin King defeated Nebraska’s No. 39 Christopher Aumueller in the Sweet 16, 6-3, 6-1.
In the doubles consolation bracket, Nebraska’s doubles team of Benedikt Lindheim and Aumueller were victorious over Ole Miss’ team of Johan Backstrom and Jonas Lutjen, 8-5. Aumueller and Lindheim will play Columbia’s duo of Nathaniel Gery and Winston Lin on Saturday at 8 a.m.
“Aumueller and Lindheim played some very good doubles today,” Nebraska head coach Kerry McDermott said. “They will play in the semis of the consolation bracket tomorrow against Columbia University. Aui didn't play so well today in singles, but King was rock solid and played very well.”
At the Gopher Invitational in round one of Group A singles play, the Huskers faced off against Denver. In Nebraska’s first match, NU’s Andre Stenger defeated Denver’s Enej Bonin in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. In the second match in Group A, Denver’s Fabio Biasion defeated NU’s Robert Schulze, 2-6, 6-4, 7-6.
In round one of Group B play, Denver’s Yannick Weihs was victorious over Nebraska’s Tom Blackwell, 6-2, 7-6. In the second match, NU’s Eric Sock defeated DU’s Jens Vorkfeld, 6-3, 6-4.
In round one of Group A doubles play, Nebraska’s duo of Stenger and Schulze were victorious over Minnesota’s team of Phillip Arndt and Leandro Toledo, 9-7.
In Group B, Minnesota’s squad of Julian Dehn and Mathieu Froment defeated NU’s team of Blackwell and Sock, 8-3.
In round two of Group A singles play, Notre Dame’s Casey Watt was victorious over Nebraska’s Stenger, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In the second match, Notre Dame’s Greg Andrews defeated NU’s Schulze, 6-3, 6-2.
In Group B, Notre Dame’s Samuel Keeton was victorious over Nebraska’s Blackwell, 6-4, 6-3. Also winning his match was Notre Dame’s Naill Fitzgerald when he defeated NU’s Sock, 6-4, 6-3.
In Group C play, Notre Dame was victorious in both matches as well. In the first match, Notre Dame’s Billy Pecor defeated Nebrsaka’s Freeman, 6-4, 6-1. Also winning was Wyatt McCoy when he defeated NU’s Brandon Videtich, 7-6, 6-4.
“Andre Stenger played very good against Denver and took out the No. 30 rankedplayer in the country and then turned around two hours later and lost a tough three set match vs. the No. 1 from Notre Dame who is No. 28 in the country,” McDermott said. “I feel Andre just ran out of a little steam trying to play back to back singles matches after a doubles match in the middle.
“Also, Eric Sock beat the No. three-four from Denver and showed some real good singles play. I feel he stepped up his level today. All in all, we have a few guys playing at positions a little high for them but this is only going to make us better down the road.”
The Huskers will be back in action on Saturday when they compete in both tournaments. Check back to Huskers.com for all your men’s tennis updates.
