Los Angeles-Nebraska women's tennis duo Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein picked up a win in their first match at the ITA Riviera All-American on Tuesday. Teammate Mary Weatherholt was edged in her first-round qualifying match and has elected to withdraw from the consolation round of the tournament.
Geibert and Weinstein faced Nazari Urbina and Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar of Texas A&M in their first-round match of the qualifying draw. Geibert and Weinstein made quick work of the Aggie duo, downing them by a score of 8-1. Nebraska's pair will advance to face Monika Kochanova and Klara Vyskocilova of Clemson in the second round. As inclement weather has postponed qualifying doubles, the match will take place on Thursday. Geibert and Weinstein need two more victories to advance to the main draw of the tournament.
"Madeleine and Stefanie played extremely well," Assistant Coach Hayden Perez said. "I feel they played intelligently and with confidence."
Mary Weatherholt took on Emily Fraser of Virginia in a hard-fought first-round qualifying singles match. Despite pulling out the first set victory, Weatherholt couldn't hold on and was narrowly defeated by Fraser, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (7). Weatherholt had the opportunity to play in qualifying singles consolation but chose to withdraw due to injury.
"Watching Mary compete was incredible," Perez said. "The match was extremely tight and it was a shame either player had to lose."
The Huskers will continue competition in the ITA All-American on Thursday as Geibert and Weinstein continue to vie for a tournament title. Fans can follow the tournament on the ITA's official Riviera All-American updates by clicking the link at the top of the page.
