Los Angeles—Mary Weatherholt advanced to the qualifying round of the ITA Riviera All-American on the second day of the tournament, rising to 3-0 in singles for the Nebraska women’s tennis team on the weekend. Teammate Patricia Veresova fell in the third round of prequalifying singles, and the doubles team of Weatherholt and Veresova also ended their run in prequalifying doubles.
Weatherholt faced Sabrina Santamaria of USC in the final round of prequalifying singles and advanced with a 6-4, 6-4 win. The redshirt junior was one of only eight competitors from the original prequalifying field of 64 to advance to the qualifying round. Weatherholt will play her first round of qualifying singles on Tuesday, facing Emily Faser of Virginia.
Patricia Veresova took on Katie Le of Santa Clara and was edged by a score of 6-4, 6-3 in the final prequalifying round. Veresova also took the court in prequalifying doubles with Weatherholt and fell to Duke’s Beatrice Capra and Ester Goldfeld, 8-1.
“"It was a great start to the tournament for the Huskers,” said Assistant Coach Hayden Perez. “I was proud of everyone's effort. This is the toughest tournament of the year and the girls performed great. We are looking forward to the challenge of the qualification draw.”
NU will continue to see action at the ITA All-American this week in the qualifying rounds of singles and doubles. Mary Weatherholt will begin qualifying singles on Tuesday, while Madeleine Geibert and Stefanie Weinstein will see their first doubles play in qualifying doubles that same day.
