Tough Loss in Doubles Finals Ends Nebraska?s Run

TULSA, Okla. - The Nebraska Cornhuskers run at the USTA/ITA Regional Championships came to an end on Tuesday in the finals of the main draw in doubles play. NU's team of Christopher Aumueller and Benedikt Lindheim were defeated by the top seed in Tulsa's squad of Ashley Watling and Clifford Marsland, 9-7. Tulsa's duo is the No. 4 doubles team in the country, while the Huskers are ranked 13th nationally.

"It was a tough, close match," Head Coach Kerry McDermott said. "The other team came up big. We were up at the breaks. Tulsa came back and played well."

The Huskers doubles squad of Aumueller and Lindheim will now wait and see if they receive and at-large bid to the 2011 USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. The Indoor Intercollegiate Championships begin on Nov. 3.

Overall, McDermott saw this tournament as a success for his squad.

"It was great for the guys," he said. "Hopefully they can use this and gain confidence."

Nebraska went 7-3 in the main draw of singles play with Aumueller playing in the semifinals and Lindheim making it to the quarterfinals. Nebraska's two doubles squads had an overall record of 5-2 in the main draw of the tournament.

The Huskers will be back in action on Nov. 4 when they travel north to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Gopher Invitational.
