DeZiel Leads USA to Gold in Team Competition at Pan Am Games

Guadalajara, Mexico --- True freshman Jessie DeZiel helped the USA women's gymnastics squad win the 2011 team title at the Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico on Monday. USA (219.750) edged our neighbors to the north, Canada (217.450), by over two points and was a full five points ahead of third-place finisher Mexico. The title marked the 14th team title for America in Pan Am Game's history.

Performing alongside some of the top gymnasts in the country, DeZeil was brilliant in scoring the highest mark of any of the competitors in the field in vault with a score of 15.125. Only one other gymnast, Catalina Escobar (Colombia), reached the 15-point mark in vault with a 15.075. The Rogers, Minn., native was nearly as strong in the beam and floor competition where she finished with the highest score out of all the Americans in both events with a score of 13.275 in beam and a 13.150 on her floor exercise.

DeZiel will be back in action for the individual finals starting on Thursday, Oct. 27, with the vault finals, and will conclude her tournament with the beam and floor finals on Friday, Oct. 28. Check back to Huskers.com for more coverage form Guadalajara.
