Huskers Finish Day One at Central Regionals

Tulsa, Okla.--The Nebraska women's tennis team finished their first day at the USTA/ITA Division I Women's Central Regional on Friday. The squad posted a record of 8-3 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles and will look to feed off their strong start tomorrow as play continues.

The Huskers had three singles competitors seeded in the main draw, and all three athletes went 2-0 in their first day of competition. No. 6 Madeleine Geibert logged a pair of straight-set victories over opponents from Wichita State and Saint Louis, while No. 15 Patricia Veresova added two quick victories over competitors hailing from Wichita State and Arkansas. Teammate Mary Weathertholt, seeded No. 16 overall, tacked up a pair of wins over opponents from Arkansas State and Missouri.

Stefanie Weinstein and Janine Weinreich both picked up strong first-round victories before falling in the second round of singles action. In addition, Maike Zeppernick fell in the first round to Marie Pier-Huet of Oklahoma.

In doubles play, No. 4 seeded Geibert and Weinstein and No. 11 seeded Veresova and Weatherholt both received byes in round one before logging strong victories in the second round. Zeppernick and Weinreich fell to opponents from Oklahoma in the first round.
