Lincoln - Morgan Marlborough's overtime goal from Kate Goetzmann ended a defensive battle that resulted in no goals by either team in regulation. The goal was Marlborough's sixth game winner of the season, her 19th goal of the year and her 58 career goal as a Husker.
With the win, the Huskers move closer to a bid to the Big Ten Tournament, as their record now sits at 7-8-1 overall and 4-5-0 in conference play. The win also moved the Huskers ahead of the Hawkeyes in the Big Ten standing, as Iowa had a two-point lead over NU entering Thursday's game.
Nebraska's defense was just as important in the win, as they continually stopped the Hawkeyes, who had 10 corner kicks in the game. Goalie Emma Stevens headlined the defense with her six saves and third shutout of the season. The Huskers only allowed 13 shots on the day, while NU's offense kept up their attack with 23 shots.
After the defenses kept each other off the scoreboard for over 98 minutes, Marlborough was able to put in the game winner on a beautiful cross from Goetzmann, who was just across midfield. Marlborough received the ball at the top of the box with three Iowa defenders around her, but the All-American was able to make a few nifty moves and find an opening. Once she was free, the junior from Lee's Summit, Mo., pinpointed a low shot at the left corner of the net at 98:56 to send the Huskers to victory.
Nebraska had a great chance in regulation to put a goal on the board, but Maddie Hanssler's header hit the crossbar. Marlborough sent in the cross from near the sideline and Hanssler timed her jump just right, but put the ball a few inches too high. Just minutes before Marlborough's game winner, Mayme Conroy also had a header that couldn't find the back of the net, as Iowa goalie Emily Moran captured one of her nine saves on the day.
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Huskers now turn their attention to No. 25 Illinois. The Fighting Illini will visit the Nebraska Soccer Field on Sunday for a 1 p.m. game, which will be streamed live on BTN.com.
