Huskers Complete Day One at All-American

Los Angeles—The Nebraska women’s tennis team wrapped up day one at the ITA Riviera All-American in California on Saturday, posting a solid 5-2 record in singles action and 1-0 in doubles. Madeleine Geibert, Stefanie Weinstein, Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt traveled to represent the team on the weekend. All four athletes competed in singles action on Saturday, while only Veresova and Weatherholt took the court for doubles.

Patricia Veresova and Mary Weatherholt both had strong days for the Big Red, going a combined 4-0 in singles and 1-0 in doubles. Veresova began with a round one win in pre-qualifying singles over Tatiana Illova of North Carolina State before edging Maryland’s Anna Belzunce in the second round.

Mary Weatherholt tacked up two solid victories in pre-qualifying singles, beginning with a sweep of Yale’s Vicky Brook, 6-2, 6-1 in the first round. She then made quick work of Kata Szekely of Tennessee, advancing with a 6-1, 6-0 victory.

Weatherholt and Veresova paired up on the doubles court for the pre-qualifying round. The duo posted a dominant win over Tulane’s Lindsay Dvorak and Caroline Thornton, 8-1.

Stefanie Weinstein picked up a round one win over Klara Vyskocilova of Clemson, 7-6 (4), 6-4 before falling to Denver’s Sophia Bergner. Teammate Madeleine Geibert fell short against Mariya Slupska of Memphis in the first round.

Nebraska’s week at the ITA All-American will continue tomorrow with more pre-qualifying singles action as well as qualifying doubles play for Geibert and Weinstein.
