Nebraska Football
Weekly Press Conference
Monday, Oct. 3, 2011
Memorial Stadium (Lincoln, Neb.)
Pre-Ohio State
Senior Wide Receiver Brandon Kinnie
On how important it is this week to get that first Big Ten Conference win
"It's very big, especially for the seniors, just to keep everybody tight. To keep everyone going and not get down on ourselves. We haven't shown signs of that and I'm not really worried, but at the same time, you have to continue to do the little things as a leader, as a senior, to keep the young guys up and keep everybody on board. Like I said, we have shown that from after the game until now. It's going to take hard work and more consistency during practice but I honestly feel like we will be fine."
On how Taylor Martinez's confidence is
"He is fine. He's our quarterback, he's our guy. That's who we are going with, so we are all aboard. There's no one that has pointed a finger at him or is saying he is the reason why, by any means. He's fine. I think he's going to bounce back."
On what it means to have Rex Burkhead speak up at the team meeting
"It means a lot. Rex is always doing the right thing and always leading by example as well. Coach Bo was leading us and talking and asked if anyone had anything to say. And then Rex just reiterated what Coach said. It always means a lot, anything coming from Rex."
On the team's response to the adversity they faced in Saturday's game
"Obviously we didn't because we didn't win the game. Not as well as we should have. Like I said, Coach Bo told us yesterday in the meeting we are going to hit adversity again this year, so we need to learn how to bounce back and take it head on instead of taking a step back."
On if he wants to forget the game or use it as motivation
"We could still take it as motivation because the Big Ten is still out there for us to grab, but you also don't want to dwell on it, because it is a new week and a new team. It's Ohio State week. We can't worry about Wisconsin anymore, but at the same time, the Big Ten is still out there to go get and we can end up meeting them again. Like I said, it's a new week. It's Ohio State week."
On what he's seen from Ohio State from watching them thus far
"They have a speedy defense. They are really fast. It might be the best defense we face in the Big Ten."
On how the team can fix itself this week
"By just doing our little things - working hard, practicing hard, competing against each other. Like Rex said, just taking care of us. Coach Bo, Coach (Tim) Beck, and a lot of coaches all year have said the only team they are afraid of is ourselves - not the other team. So if we take care of us, we will be fine."
On how much better Jamal Turner can get in his career
"He could be great, but it's all up to him. He has to continue to take coaching, continue to work hard every week, and do what he's doing. But, like I said, he's a freshman, but he makes mistakes, but he makes plays, too. He plays fast. He'll be fine, but like I said, he works hard every day in practice. I have a lot of faith in that he will be great, but he has to work toward that, too. All of us do."
On if there is more incentive to win this week because Coach Bo Pelini went to Ohio State
"Not really. We haven't really thought about it so much. We just want to get the win to get the win, because they are on our schedule."
On if Coach Pelini ever talks about his playing days there
"No."
On if everything they want to accomplish this season is still in front of them
"Yeah. Just like last year, we lost to Texas and still got to the Big 12 Championship, so we know that it is still out there. That's why I believe guys are not giving up at all, pointing fingers, or doing anything like that. Staying together is another key thing this week as well. All we have to do is win out and we'll be fine. At the same time, we have to take it one game at a time and fix us first."
