Lincoln - The Nebraska softball team used the long ball and solid pitching to sweep past Wayne State in a doubleheader Friday night at Bowlin Stadium. The Huskers hit four home runs in a 24-6, five-inning victory in game one, before shutting out the Wildcats, 4-0, in game two.
Nebraska's offense exploded in game one, recording more than 20 hits, including four home runs. Junior Brooke Thomason hit a grand slam and sophomores Tatum Edwards and Kylee Muir and junior Gabby Banda hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in an 11-run fourth inning for the Huskers. Edwards and senior right-hander Haley Workman both saw action in the circle in the win. Edwards earned the victory, allowing three runs in 4.0 innings, while Workman allowed three runs in her inning of work.
In game two, the Husker pitching took center stage as senior right-hander Ashley Hagemann fired a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts. In a unique matchup, she retired her younger sister Megan, a freshman catcher at Wayne State, each of the three times she faced her. Offensively, freshman Jordan Bettiol gave Hagemann all of the run support she would need with a two-run double in the third inning. Nebraska then added single runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
Nebraska wraps up its fall exhibition season on Sunday with a doubleheader against Creighton at Bowlin Stadium. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. and admission is free.
