Lincoln - Nebraska Head Coach Gary Pepin announced on Monday the hiring of Virginia Associate Head Coach Carrie Lane to the Huskers' track and field staff. Lane has spent the past seven seasons with the Cavaliers, guiding the male and female throwers.
"Carrie has done a really nice job of coaching and recruiting at the universities that she has been at formerly," Pepin said. "She has done a lot of work on the national scene through her writing and speaking engagements. She is highly respected out there among the elite throws coaches in the country."
During her time at the University of Virginia, Lane helped develop comprehensive training programs for throwers, including workout schedules, technical training, strength development and video analysis. Lane also coordinated the recruiting program for the throwers and monitored the academics of her athletes.
"I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to the rich history that is Nebraska Track and Field," Lane said. "Nebraska has a national reputation for being a successful and well-rounded track and field program. The Huskers know how to win, and it is exciting to be a part of that. I also really like the coaching staff. They work very hard and are genuine people."
Prior to her time at the University of Virginia, Lane was an assistant track and field coach and cross country coach at Coastal Carolina University from 1999 to July 2004. She also spent time as an assistant academic coordinator at Coastal Carolina for two years where she managed many academic programs for the student-athletes. In addition, Lane was a graduate assistant coach for men's and women's cross country at Eastern Illinois University and also served as an academic coordinator at Marquette University.
"Nebraska has always had such a rich throws tradition and it is one of the few prominent throwing programs that has been able to successfully develop regional and in-state talent and attract top throwers from all over the country and the world," Lane said. " To be able to build on the success that Coach Colligan established is an honor. The facilities at Nebraska are fantastic. From the indoor track, to the new weight room, outdoor track, and dedicated thrower training area affectionately known as 'The Rock,' there are numerous opportunities to develop and foster the talents of world-class throwers."
Originally for the Midwest, Lane received her master's degree in physical education from Eastern Illinois University in August 1999. She received her bachelor's degree and graduated cum laude in international affairs from Marquette University in 1997.
Lane also had numerous professional accomplishments including serving as the USA National Team Assistant Coach for the World Championships in 2009 and 2011. She has represented the USA at the IAAF International Coaches' Conference in Kienbaum, Germany. She was also named the USTFCCCA Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2009 in addition to numerous other honors and certifications.
Lane's student-athlete's have earned 15 All-America awards, including NCAA runner-up in the men's discus in 2008. Her athletes also helped the University of Virginia Track and Field team achieve better than a 90 percent graduation rate.
"We're really excited about having her join our staff," Pepin said. "When she came in for her visit, she met several of the men and women throwers and they really liked her a lot. I know she will be a real fine addition to our staff here at Nebraska. She has a lot of enthusiasm and a lot of experience."
