Fowler Selected for High School All-America Game

Incoming Husker freshman Mattie Fowler was chosen to participate in the 2011 Under Armour All-America Softball Game, ESPN Rise announced on Wednesday. Fowler was one of 30 high school players nationally invited to the prestigious event.

The fourth annual event will be held later this month at the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. Fans can watch the game on Saturday, July 23 at 6 p.m. (Central) on ESPNU. Nebraska has had a participant in each of the four All-America games, as sophomore Taylor Edwards played in each of the first three events.

The selection to the Under Armour All-America game is yet another accolade for Fowler following a standout senior season for Canyon del Oro High School in Tucson, Ariz. Fowler was also selected as a first-team high school All-American by MaxPreps, and she was one of 10 finalists for the organization's national high school player-of-the-year award. Fowler was also selected as the Gatorade Softball Player of the Year for the state of Arizona and was a finalist for the national Gatorade Softball Player-of-the-Year award.

This past spring, Fowler captured the third state championship of her high school career while both hitting and pitching for the Dorados. At the plate, Fowler batted .569 with 17 home runs, 22 doubles and 91 RBIs. The 91 RBIs were an Arizona state record, while she also set school records for most doubles and home runs in a season. On a national level, Fowler led all high school players nationally in RBIs and ranked ninth in home runs, according to MaxPreps.

In the circle, Fowler posted a 14-0 record despite pitching for the first time since eighth grade. She owned a 0.85 ERA with 74 strikeouts in 82.0 innings. During the state tournament, Fowler started each of Canyon del Oro's final three games and allowed only three runs. She helped the Dorados finish with a 36-1 record and a No. 2 national ranking.

Following the Under Armour All-America game and a summer season with her travel team the AZ Desert Thunder, Fowler will be one of three freshmen who officially join the Husker softball team in August.
