Griva Closes European Champs with PR

Ostrava, Czech Republic - The European U23 Championships came to a close on Sunday at City Stadium with two current Huskers in competition. Mara Griva took to the long jump runway, while Martina Barinova competed in her home country in the 5,000 meters.

After taking ninth in the triple jump on Friday, Griva took fifth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 21-7 ½. Following a scratch on her first try of the competition, Griva added two inches to her previous PR of 21-5 ½ from this season's Nebraska Open on her second attempt. The jump moved the Ventspils, Latvia, native from fourth to a tie for third in the NU record books with Karen Kruger, who also cleared 21-7 ½ in 1987. Angela Thacker holds the NU outdoor record in the long jump with a leap of 22-4 ¼.

A product of Prerov, Czech Republic, Barinova finishes 11th out of 18 runners in the 5,000 meters. A two-time All-Big 12 performer during her first season at Nebraska in 2011, Barinova clocked a time of 16:35.82.
